We have a pohutukawa that drops leaves

constantly into our spouting and clogs up the gutters, we are on tank water. If I ring council will we have to get resource consent to have tree removed, or when I ring should I not tell them my address and over time just saw branches off? Thank you.

I'm confused - why would you ring council? Do you mean just to find out info? Then yeah, I guess you could give a "hypothetical" question re a Pohutukawa and find the info you want. Have you looked on your council's website?

Google your councils website and on it you should be able to find a list of protected trees and if yours is on it. If so then do not touch it.

Saw the branches off NOW,,, Why on earth anyone has to drink crap water is rubbish,,Chances are Murtle rust will turn up and solve your problem for you

This country's got red tape / resource consent fatigue to the point where someone asks this rather than keep their water clean !

I'm with the above - prune it back now. It will survive and frankly they love being pruned.

We had a very large mature Pohutukawa in Takapuna ( it's still there) it was a protected tree and we couldn't touch it unless a branch was going to drop for some reason.

While I'm all for keeping trees, I would say that it is always easier to ask forgiveness than permission. Prune it, dont cut it down. Try some gutter guards in your spouting.

If it’s not protected, prune it at the roots

maybe drill and poison it. If it dies you can remove itbut if its growing bigger the local athorities can incorperate it in their local plan.Dead Is DEAD but alive is a different set of rules. Had one that cost thousands insewer tile line costs

And give it a very strong dose of Tordon 2G granules. Your problems will be resolved within a few months and I'll send you the bank details for the advice fee then. If they don't fix it, I don't expect payment.
