We are having afew large trees cut and chipped

We wanted the chipped wood tobe left so we could put it like chips around the house. But the contractor said as its green trees and wood it would bring heaps of mosquitos to around the house. Does this sound correct, sure we dont want mosquitos but will later have to buy bark. Thank you.

I thought it was water that brought them. I have never heard of chipped fresh wood, remarkably strange but then I haven't lived where mozzies are for years.
Just googled it and if there are quite damp places then mosquito can lay eggs. Just spread thinly and I believe it should be fine.

We use heaps of fresh chipped wood chips at work every year and never had a mosquito problem. Not sure where this comes from. Even if it was true, at this time of year the chip will dry very fast, so I can not see any issues. Perhaps your contractor wants to on sell the chip?

Thanks malcovy and maclad, yes I thought mossies were attracted to water and yes I think the contractor wants to sell the chip, he said same price whether he takes chip or leaves it.

If the chipped material includes greenery the heap will heat up slightly like a compost heap. Don't be concerned if the heap steams for a few weeks/months as this is a good thing especially if the chipped trees include willow as it will stop the buds sprouting after you spread the chip.

We had a big chipping operation on our property almost 2 years ago and when an excavator moved and turned the pile (about 100 m3) recently the centre was still steaming. And no mosquito problems since we have had the pile there.

I had a lot of (native) trees removed, and chipped the lot, its amazing how much it weighs, and contractor was only to happy to leave it here as he would have to pay to dump it, by weight, where it would have been 'sold on' anyway, and no mossies here. I let it dry for a few weeks on the drive before I spread it around.

Rubbish. Mosquitoes like water not wood, green or not.
If anything you'd get slaters.

Agreed. mosquitoes breed in stagnant water not piles of wood chips.

You will however get every other sort of bug and crawly thing you can imagine. Wont be anything harmful, they are are just there helping break down the chips into compost (or eating the things that are)

So why would he take it?

les6, Sep 18, 11:12am
compost it and sell it?

bill1451, Sep 18, 2:13pm
after 2 or 3 years it will completely break down and revert to black rich soil, the worms love it.

annies3, Sep 18, 2:55pm
seems your contractor wants some free material to compost or sell.

At least one of the local arborists here advertise wood chip for sale. They charge extra ( over the tree felling charge ) to chip the trees and remove them, then sell the chip as well. Nice work if you can get it.
