I am going to plant some garlic bulbs.
The instructions on packet, says, split the bulbs and plant.
I have split them,
Do I peel off the outside bit, or plant as is.
and of course , being a newbie, which way do I plant them.
sorry for dumb questions, but just taken a great taste for them.
Also, can you eat the bulbs in the packet. they dont look any different to the garlic in shop.thanks

I plant individual cloves, skin & all & thick end down (where the roots have been).
It likes plenty of feeding & water.
I don't know about eating it, can't see why not, but why would you?
It's best to plant the largest cloves, or so I've read.
Good luck.

Plant the blunt side down in well composted soil.
They hate other plants and weeds competing, so keep it clean, and plant only the biggest bulbs keeping the rest for the kitchen.

Don't peel them. Plant with the pointed end up. Get them in as soon as possible so they can get some growth on before spring.

Don't eat the garlic sold for planting as it may have been sprayed with pesticide or fungicide.

thanks off to the garden

I have split the bulbs, one bulb only had lots of small cloves.
In regards to davidt4. shouldnt it say on packet, (which it doesnt). not to eat.
After peeling off all the layers of skin, would spray get into the clove.
such a waste for the small ones.
4 bulbs in packet and have about 20 big ones.
comments welcome

Right, it seems we all agree, huh?
korbo, what sort of spray are you meaning?
I never spray garlic.
I grow enough to last all season & of course there are some small cloves not worth planting . I just get another packet, if I haven't enough decent home grown bulbs left.

. I mean what davidt4 quoted, that maybe the bulbs could be sprayed before going on sale in plant shops, and whether you could eat the small cloves. I know the chinese garlic is bleached and goodness knows what else. I have bought that, but prefer NZ

NZ Garlic much better tasting! I'm a stingy bastard just using veggie store bought garlic to plant out. It seams to grow ok with good bulbs, just make sure only the biggest are planted out.

Make sure the soil is well fed first before planting. Plant cloves just under the soil. Feed regularly thru the growing season, and don’t forget to water when the rain stops in spring. Doesn’t matter how much food is in the soil if you don’t water, it’s just as critical as food.

Garlic is best planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest day. Garlic hates weeds. There is no reason whatsoever to spray Garlic it acts as a deterrent to many pests and is an ideal companion plant.

If you google the goodness that it contains you would never stop eating it. as i do!
Don't however plant when soil conditions are too wet.And only buy NZ Garlic as it's highly sort after world wide.
