Thoughts on kitchen layout?

Anything you think won't work?
(I continue to debate whether to put the sink in the island or under the window, but interested in other thoughts too).

The sink on the island cuts the space so would keep under the window. I prefer longer uninterrupted spaces. The flow from stove to sink looks good. Would you move the dishwasher to the island too? If your sink was on the island, what space would you use for serving?

Do u need the aisle at the window end of island. ie make it a u shape not an island and gain usable space.

So glad we didn’t put sink in island.

I think I want the aisle? It stops the kitchen being super narrow and allows easier circulation for two cooks. Also I find corner cupboards not super great.

The island does seem a long way away from the bench. Our little one is about 700mm which is good for a one person and a little cosy for 2. If I had had 1300mm I would have gone for a U shaped to have more bench.

I would put the sink under the window. Having that extra bit of bench space on the island is great when you're entertaining. You can put food and drinks out on it. And it's a cleaner look for the kitchen.

And I'm not sure if you're getting open shelves, but after my sister-in-law grizzled that she spent a lot of time washing the glasses before she could use them, we went for glass doors. The cupboard has glass shelves and looks really nice.

its a better "kitchen triangle" if the sink is on the island

We currently have open shelving for pots, cups and water glasses - they're used so often that they don't need rewashing before use.
We do have a crockery cabinet with glass doors, which holds plates, bowls, teacups, saucers and wine glasses. Our wine glasses are used so seldom they always need washing before use anyway - so not sure if there's a solution to that except drinking wine more often!

Far too much space for a woman in the kitchen. If she's standing at the stove and can reach the pantry, fridge and sink that's plenty.

Am now running for cover.

I think the sink under the window works better and does keep your lines clean.
It is true that the sink in the island improves your kitchen triangle rule, but i think it still works with the sink under the window too (and looks better that way)
I also think it would be easier to hide the fact you may have a sink full of dirty dishes with it under the window, rather than if it was in the island.

while washing up, do u want to interract with your guests and watch tv, or interract with the birds out the window?

majoba, Feb 19, 1:26pm
Another vote for under the window. That was just one of the many mistakes i was persuaded to do by both the builder and architect. Regretted ever since having it in the island.

luteba, Feb 19, 1:43pm
We don't have guests all that often, and the kitchen/dining space will still be small enough to have a conversation with them even if at the sink. We don't have the TV anywhere near the kitchen, so that's not an issue. I do like watching the birds in the bird bath out the window. but that would be a vote in favour of the island sink, as the window above the sink has no view: it has bubble glass as it's on a 1m wide side path down the side of the house. We have the window for light rather than outlook.

Definitely don't put it in the island, under the window looks great.

I like the island as is and the sink under the window. The sink in the island cuts down so much bench space, especially for baking, dishing up dinner etc. If you have small people helping you bake you need the extra space so they can take their time and you can go flat out to get things made. The only thing I would never have again in a kitchen is open shelves. We had them in our previous home and they drove me NUTS. Much easier to keep things clean and tidy with cupboards with doors. Another thing we have in this house is the pull out kitchen tidy right under the bench by the sink. Just do the veg and swipe all the bits into it.
