Looking for the best / most suitable product for sealing hardwood for food use. Made a platter/server out of old kwila but not sure what to finnish it with.

I have sealed my macrocarpa bench with liberon finishing oil, great hard wearing surface, and not shiny/glossy. Its easy to use and it takes a minimum of 3 coats.

Tung oil really needs thinning with turps for the first coat to get good penetration. then you'll get a turps tainting of food though.
Why not just ordinary cooking oil? Nice and thin for penetration, easily re coated, and no tainting.
Not sure what cooking oil would be best, but I know it has been used in the past for wooden kitchen items.

Always use a good food grade oil, one you have to hand regularly. That way the piece will last for generations and be easy to maintain with no risk to food. I use sesame oil on my salad bowls, I just wipe them out with it after use and they smell yummy even without the salad.

Coconut oil. The non stinky kind. Rice brain oil. Any light vege oil. Tung oil is the best option, as it hardens as it dries, and soaks in well, but be aware that people with severe nut allergies may react, as it is the oil from a tree nut. It will give your platter a deep rich color and highlight the grain. I have not found vege oils to do this quite so well. Make sure it is food grade and not furniture grade. Mostly it is food grade that is sold. Also know as salad bowl oil or some such. Liberon is one brand, though I saw another cheaper one in M10, but can't recall the brand

I have just sanded back my wooden chopping board, and oiled with Tung oil. Looks great. I researched as you did, and went with Tung oil as olive oil and the like can go rancid.
Really pleased with the result. The oil had a very slight nutty odour, which has now vanished after 48 hours.

Tung oil does dry with quite a durable skin. The old Enfield .303 rifle butts were coated with tung oil.
