over an existing water based enamel? I painted a desk a few years ago and the water based is nowhere near hardwearing. Do i need to sand and apply a primer or can I sand and apply the oil based enamel paint? Thanks in advance

what's it say on the tin? i have painted oil based over old water based plenty of times with nothing more than a good sand. whether it's the right thing to do or not, i have no idea, but it's never been a problem for me.

Sand and apply a coat of oil based undercoat (tinted as close to finish colour), then apply super gloss enamel. Peter

It will look like crap as you will accent the grunge. Preparation is everything for a nice paint finish. Sand it until beautiful.
