Anyone with a decent knowledge of Michelia Figo who can give me some advice? I purchased some trees off TradeMe last December. They've been planted on the edge of a raised veggie patch so the soil is very good. I dug the holes deep and wide and mixed compost through the soil before planting. They weren't overly 'bushy' when I purchased them as they needed planting out. They almost seem to have gone a bit backwards. Is this normal that they look a bit woody? Should I be feeding them with anything? They are quite sparse on leaves and I'm such a novice gardener I have no idea what the right thing to be doing is.

They can be a lil bit frost tender when young, they should come back just give them a it of time.

From my experience they love sheep pellets. When you planted them did you keep them watered over the hottest months?.

If they are looking a bit sad and sparsly leafed try to pinch out the ends of the shoots as they get big enough. This should help to bush them up. Never buy plants which are not in a great healthy condition as they will most likely be disappointing.

Yep definitely kept them well watered when they were first planted. They were in better condition when I purchased them but they would have suffered if they hadn't been planted out soon as they were growing out of their pots. The guy was selling them at a really good price for the height they are as he hadn't got room to plant them anymore and he could see they needed to be soon. Will investigate sheep pellets thanks!

It sounds to me like they have been over watered. The other problem could be that they get a lot of wind? Stop watering and add some fertiliser. If the soil is ok you may need to water only in Jan and Feb!

Best value sheep pellets around are from Farmlands - Norlake 25kg for $28! Have used them for ages. Am waiting for rain to start & then I'm spreading them all around my garden. Good soil conditioner.
