Why does the S-bend have to be underneath a shower

My shower base is installed on top of a concrete slab and there's a depression cut in the floor for the S-bend right under the outlet. It's almost impossible to clean out. Why can't there be just a right-angle and the pipe run to an S-bend outside?

Use an easy clean waste instead.

So weren't they available in 1992?

A longer drain pipe going to a trap would build up a layer of scum/fatty deposits, which would stink your bathroom out. That is why it is fitted right underneath. The easy clean traps don't tend to last. Go to a plumbers merchant and have a look at one. Then ask yourself if you would trust it to last 50 years.
Why can't you just get a bottle brush and give your S trap a huck out?

The trap is almost out of reach to be unscrewed without demolishing the shower. The plumber who re-plumbed the whole house 20 odd years ago did almost everything wrong.
