Shower Trays - Quality vs Cost?

Our house had a new bathroom installed roughly 5-6 years ago (pre us owning it). The shower base has now developed cracks and gone soft - whether due to a bad install or bad product - yet to find out.

It now needs replacing before more damage is done - doesn't look too bad yet under the house.

The plumber has quoted $2800 to install a new one using a clearlite "cezanne". Retail roughly $1600. He will probably be getting a better price than that but anyway.

Looking at both Trademe and some other importers in Auckland there are plenty of cheaper options out there. But are these likely to be any worse quality? Not too phased on the looks, but we need to put it a rounded corner shower to save doing any more extensive work.

Am I risking being tight over say $6-1000 on a cheaper shower and running into trouble in a couple of years again?

its unusual for a tray to crack, probably unsupported underneath

Yeah feels soft - we think installer has mucked it up. Multiple hairline cracks though - and I'm not that heavy!

A cheaper shower should be ok - check the guarantee. Some are up to 10 years.

The cheap imports are much thinner. They can easily be damaged during installation. If you are having a shower with the matching wall lining beware of the cheap ones. Our shower installer told us that if we purchased cheap imported crap he would not install it as he had had so many break as tbey are too thin. Not an issue with Englefield, Athena etc. you do get what you pay for.

A friend re did their bathroom 2 years ago. Have a shower over bath. Bought the bath and wall liner from an Asian bath fittings importer.
The angle of the rim around bath isn't right, so the water does not drain down into bath, but sit on top/ into caulking. Bath scratched very easily. Wall liner has actually yellowed. def not white anymore!
Learnt the lesson. you get what you pay for

There is alot of labour involved in replacing a shower tray. The cost of the tray by itself is only a small part of it. The plumber has quoted on a complete shower. To make installation easier. If you buy a cheap shower, does the guarantee cover removal and installation? as it is not going to help much if the supplier says "here is a replacement shower tray" But you then have to pay yourself to have it installed.
