Who has (or has had) a wooden kitchen bench top?

Does anyone have a wooden kitchen bench top? Oiled or varnished? Do you love it or hate it? Is it a pain to maintain? And do you have wood around your sink?

Love the look but am doubting myself.

Thanks!

I can remember one we had which was just wooden which we used to scrub till it was spotless, it was not painted or varnished, must have been good timber because I know it was very old but was not rotten or anything, we have a formica one here but have a varnished solid Rimu top around the unit, it never marks even with heat on it, neighbour put a macrocarpra unit in but painted it very high gloss black, it doesn't appeal to me being so black but from all accounts works just fine.

Yes, ours is 14 years old. Several layers of oil when installed and is Fijian Kauri. Easy care, still in original condition. Overlaps the sink. No problems, highly recommended.
Re oil it every three years.

Had varnished wood. Looked ok superficially but up close it had lots of marks, nicks, dents even the wine bottle bases would leave an imprint if they were set down too hard :( Around the taps had gone dark looking from water marks. Took a lot of time to sand back & refinish but it didn't last. Have another property now, much prefer engineered stone for work tops but do have an oiled rimu top as a display bench alongside an internal staircase, that seems to be ok. Wonder if an oiled finish in the other kitchen would have been easier to live with?

I had some kauri benchtops in an old cottage I used to own. They looked good but werent equal to a modern surface in practical terms.

Thanks - anyone else?

Seems oiled may be ok, but we do have three young children so anything is going to get a bit hammered!

Anyone else? What about bamboo?

I think it depends on the type of varnish or polyurethane as to wether it will mark if it has a knock or heat on it, certainly the rimu I was talking about has not marked in over 10 years, also the hardness of the timber will have a bearing on this, as for bamboo ! if the reports of failing decking is anything to go by then I would steer well clear.

I had a rimu one with Danish oil when I changed the kitchen I turned it into a coffee table

We have macrocapa- they do mark if you drop something on them etc, but this adds to the character and ours have served our family well for a long time! Last year I sanded and re varnished the sink bench one as it was getting a bit worn looking after 17 years. It came up really well.
