Most of them also had several large fireplaces to heat the rooms.
Carpeting was also very expensive back then which is part of the reason why large rugs/floor mats were common & they were also easier to clean because they could take them outside.

A lot of older houses have gaps in the walls and floor corners that don't help at all. Our house was built in 1969, much more recent than yours. We had to rip out the walls in one room (sunroom) and completely replace them because there were actually gaps in the corners. To be fair, the sunroom was added a couple of years after the original house was built - and it was NOT built to anything resembling modern building code.
After the rebuild, the whole house is much warmer, because there were drafts coming in from the sunroom walls.
