Vertical cracks in new house paint

jaffa77, Dec 2, 9:52am
My house was painted (by spraying) in late October and since then a few vertical cracks have appeared which run the entire width of the weatherboard. I obviously need to contact the painter to get this fixed but I would first like to understand what has caused this so I know what to ask to be fixed. I don't want the painter to come back and just fix the cracks that currently exist if in fact the whole job is defective such that other problems will show up the future. From what I can tell, the painters seemed to do a really thorough job of the prep. Can anyone advise please.

I don't know if this applies in your case or not. We have similar cracks in the paintwork of our windows which were painted five years ago, but they appeared after 3 years. We were not impressed. This past week I have had a the pleasure of employing an older tradesman to do the stopping at our place, he is also a painter. I asked him to look at the windows and advise me.

He told me that the cracks were probably caused by using enamel paint either as an undercoat or topcoat. The enamel doesn't give like acrylic paints and as the wood expands and contracts, the paint splits then curls up in some cases. He advised us to sand it right back and apply only a top quality acrylic paint.

shrinkage or movement, may show more with some colours than others,
I like to see what fordkiwi think of it too, prob at the pub though ;)

these cracks must be the joins in weatherboards!
maybe they have put filler over joins to smooth out uneveness and it has cracked i have had that problem in the past.
wood shrinks and expands especially if a dark colour has been used.

if you are in Christchurch will be movement from the shakes

its also possible that the paint was thinned out too much and as it has cured it has split. Acrylic paint is like gladwrap and as it dries it shrinks onto the surface it has been applied too.make the paint too thin and it has no structural integrity and literally splits or breaks very quickly.

I am not in Christchurch. The paint is light colour. I would expect that all weatherboards would expand and shrink as the temperature changes and therefore any exterior paint would need to cope with this to be fit for purpose. This is very disappointing as I paid what seemed like a lot of money. The painters slagged off the previous 11-year old paint job but it seems like their painting won't last a fraction of that time. I suspect that I will end up paying to get someone else repaint it to avoid water damage to the weatherboards as I imagine water can get in now that the seal is broken. It was painted with Resene paint so presumably the issue is with the application rather than the paint itself.

Vertical cracks running the entire width of the boards! So are there lots of up and down cracks on horizontal weatherboards! Or are they horizontal cracks running along the boards! Is it a dark colour! Was the old paint completely stripped! are there cracks in the timber! Just on the sunny sides of the house!

says light colour. but yes to the other questions. need pics

I really dont think a couple of cracks is goin to be the end of the paint job!
I very much doubt its the paint thats the issue are these cracks on joins or not or just random cracks!

The weatherboards are horizontal. Some of them have cracks that run top
-to-bottom across the weatherboard. The cracks are in different places on each weatherboard. It rained here over the weekend for the first time in quite a while and this morning I noticed there were what looked like blisters in places. When I pushed in on one, water oozed out. These blisters weren't there before it rained. I will see if I can get a photo tomorrow.

Are the cracks in what appear to be where the weather boards are joining !
