and some I see are lovely and bushy and others are just stalky. Any hints on these?

They grow very well from cuttings and can get bushy if you prune them.

Yes they need pruning to stay green and bushy

Prune about early September after frosts or very cold weather are over. I have to say, though, that my very old Suva Queen has gone leggy in spite of that, but probably it's time to replace it .
