Growing yams

tazzle08, Dec 15, 9:03am
I found a bag of yams sprouting in the back of my fridge. can anyone tell me how deep / distance apart i should plant these. Do I treat them like potatoes and mound up the soil around the stems as they sprout? any suggestions?

Yes grow them like spuds but do not harvest them until the first frost.

They should grow for you, but no don't mould them up, the only time we did this the plant disappeared never to be seen again, good luck.

Stick them in the ground about 3- 5 cm deep, and 10-20 cm apart. They don't need much care or mounding up, but you get better tubers if the soil is fairly rich, and doesn't dry out too much. You can grow them in pots too, but keep the pot out of direct sun so the roots don't get hot, and remember to water. Harvest in winter when the tops die down. Oca is invasive, so when you harvest, remove every bit of root, or it will grow back. Next season, weed out any volunteer plants that grow back in the wrong place before they set tubers.
EDIT: word of warning. If they do well, they'll take over the area you've planted them. And if they don't do well, you'll get tubers with little chewed out holes from pests trying to eat them. Good luck.

OH yes you have worded it so well .
OP , give them a go , but do note above , I cut a 44 gal drum in half length wise / fold over , back to back , plus drain holes , And grow them in that , for a couple of years , then toss the soil out in rubbish .
Start fresh again ., makes life easy .
