Late Spring This Year

cantabman1, Sep 10, 2:34pm
A keen gardener, I am struggling to get seeds and plants growing this season with all the cold blasts every week.
Whitebaiting isn't fairing much better, only getting out three times so far and bugger all caught; best day 400 grams. This time last year, I had over 7kgs in the freezer.
How are everybody's else gardens going this year?

-2 tuesday night in Christchurch. Most of my seeds are really struggling to sprout too.

I just got out my seed envelopes yesterday, but I think it's probably still too cold here (Nelson) to sow any outside, but I just might start some off on the dining room bench

Yes it is, the soil is just not warming up. I am going to pop down a trailer load of bio blend on the vege garden on top of the turned over compost to warm things up. We pin our frost cloth to the fence and drape over every night.

too cold in Southland this season, the ground is too cold and wet to touch. i grow of seedlings using a small heat pad, the mesulin and lettuces are alomost ready to plant out but still too cold and wet. i've even had an early row of spuds in by now in previous seasons but not this year.

It's virtually the same every year. Remember those young potato sprouts that get hit by late frost in Oct? Don't forget Winter is about 6 mths long. It starts getting cold in Autumn and continues on into Summer.

Freesias been out since early August. Grape vine has small leaves, rose has flowers all over it, cherry tree has buds. Capsicums, 2 early tomatoes and courgette planted and doing ok. Peas in. Silverbeet, beetroot all growing well, pulled the last of the leeks last week. Spring is here in Waitakere anyway.

I've started all my seeds off inside. Then shifted to the greenhouse once they have the first set of true leaves, lettuce, spinach etc are all looking great. The tomato an capisum I have kept inside for now. The tomato plants are 10cm tall now, still to risky with frosts in chch to put them in the greenhouse.

Yes, its a good couple of weeks slower this spring.

Salad greens and beetroot plants had a slow start but coming along ok now.

First lot of spuds planted a couple of weeks later than usual, but now about 35cm above ground and banked up.

budgel, Sep 17, 3:22pm
The tomatoes I planted around Fathers day are now 300mm or so tall.
Living in the Far North has a few advantages, but it has been a slow start to spring here too, lots of rainy days and puggy ground.,
