Gib Repair Question

kaconda, Jul 27, 8:50am
Hi, I want to repair a hairline crack on a gib join using gib paper tape. My question is do I use Tradeset or plus 4? My thoughts were Tradeset under the tape and plus 4 over it. cheers.

Yes definitely trade set to bed-in the tape first, then +4 or other finishing compound;

although, there is now a newish compound, fast setting and apparently OK for bedding AND top coat.
(work fast if using this)

Don't forget to scrape the joint out 1st so you don't get an excessive build up of plaster.

For a hairline crack, is it even necessary to use tape? Could you not just skim over it with +4?

Yes or the crack could very likely reappear.

is the crack under or over a window or door it will likely return no mater what you do

Hi, dig it out as a Vee . .plaster and paint ,

Dig a deep Vee and fill it with Bostik Gold wallboard glue. Don't overfill, just to slightly below the surface. Once it is properly dry tape and plaster. It may not be strictly according to the Gib guide but it helps to stop cracks reappearing over windows and doors.

Tradeset using FibaFuse tape.
It's not necessary to scrape out a V over a hairline crack.
