How far off the ground?

Mitr10 have a nice wee booklet for home handymen on subjects like this.

I use 450 centres on a bearers n joist deck,as you are using softwood (tp) advise that you use screws rather than nails & as survival suggests M 10 have handout material on DIY stuff, also if under a mt off the ground you won't need a handrail & possibly a resource consent pay to check tho good luck

Will be just under a metre.

Don't use that as an excuse to leave the railings off. Whether or not handrails are fitted determines joist minimum depth.

Where did that come from? I cant see the relatonship between joist depth and handrails.
Please explain.

If you are bolting the barrier posts to the edge joists the joists must be 190mm min @ 400mm centres according to NZS 3604.

For joists I use roughsawn H4 timber because H3 is about three times the price. I know that sounds stupid but check out H4/H3 prices.

Someones having you on. Bear in mind the H4 R/S is probably no.2.

If it's not straight I cut it straight!

All my no.2 timber is straight,it is graded on stiffness, and is all very usable.
