Simple fence - any ideas on ballpark cost please?

I've just had what seems an exorbitant quote on a front boundary fence.

It's very straightforward - flat residential section, 14 metres wide, nothing to navigate. 1.2m wood palings with basic posts and railings. Would only be minimal dirt from the postholes and that can stay on site.

Does anyone have an idea on a ballpark figure for materials and labour for something like that ? Obviously I'll get more quotes but I'm just interested in what you guys think.

I had thought around $1200 max. ?

Thanks.

wood is really expensive for fencing.

yes I know. but the alternatives aren't that attractive really. I wanted something permanent that can be stained. I was happy to pay around $1200 but seems I may need to readjust my expectations !

How far apart are the palings - can you spread them out a bit more to use less. About 7 years ago I was quoted $70 per metre for a rough sawn paling fence with 1.5cm gaps. Wood is probably more expensive now.

That's a fair price you were quoted and yes I would certainly be ok with 1.5 cm gaps (looks better than tightly close-boarded in my opinion anyway). 14 metres at $70/m is reasonable and even with some increase in timber prices I would have expected around $90/100 per metre now.

The quote was over $2000 which I think it way too high. I'll have to get some other quotes it's just hard when you're not living in the town that you want the work done in !

the labour cost would have to be a 'mates rate' to get it done at that price.

Just a random listing on tm.

I put up a 12m section, 1.5m high recently, all pre painted, posts concreted in, materials alone between $800 and $900, did all the labour myself.
