Rusting hinges on security door

rpvr, Feb 2, 9:05pm
Some years ago we had a security door installed, and in less than 2 years the hinges were rusty. Complained to the company and they replaced them. The replacements lasted a bit longer, but are now rusting again. I think the problem is that the frame is aluminium and the hinges are white painted steel, and there seems to be some kind of galvanic action going on, making the hinges rust under the paint, which then lifts off. Anyone else had this problem? I thought there may be some other kind of hinge which may last longer.

Stainless steel hinges and screws. Sounds like they would be the solution to your problem.

Does the door hinge have a bend in the leaf ? Yes
That's all you can get. No Stainless steel ones.

75mm security door hinge $7.70 each. Approx

I would hesitate to use stainless steel in contact with aluminium. I put a stainless steel bolt through the aluminium tube of a TV aerial once. Result: galloping erosion (white rust) of the aluminium around the hole where it was in contact with the bolt.

one you have the new hinges, grease them -often

Electrolysis is what happens when alloy and metal are in contact, put some sort of gasket between the hinges and door frame so they,re not in contact!

Except that when they are rivetted on, there is contact between hinge/rivet/frame.

No point in debating it coz you know your just going to use the same hinge again if your going to change them, so just get on with it.
It is what it is :)
And if ya using ya door as a * Security * door then ya wouldn't use aluminium rivets either.

I had them replaced by a tradesman (window and door specialist) and told him about how they rust after only a short time. He reckons his ones won't, so I now have an invoice and "fit for purpose" CGA rules apply. Hinges should last at least 10 years.

what did it cost ya? what sort of hinge did ya get? are ya gonna show us ?
Ive only ever seen whitco hinges https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/362015954.jpg white or black, they have the bend in one leaf.
