Cat door in double glazed glass?

starseeker, Apr 4, 4:59am
Is it possible to get a cat flap put into a double-glazed door?
If not, are there any alternative suggestions (getting rid of cat is NOT an option)
Thanks

Put cat door in wall.

yes its not a problem apparently.

Its very expensive so we had the bottom glass panel replaced with single glaze then had the catflap fitted

We have a double glazed glass door (single pane) with a cat flap near the bottom so it is possible.

yes but in retrospect i wouldnt do it, certainly not unless its a very high quality insulated catdoor.

You will find many glaziers wont retrofit a cat door into double glazing, or if they do, it'll be expensive.

We got a dog door in our double glazed, we did it in a half window at the bottom. Not cheap, but needed to be done

The reason it is unwise (apart from cost) to fit a cat door in double glazing is that it is very difficult to do a permanent perfect seal and sooner or later dust and crud collects between the two thicknesses and just gets worse with time. It is impossible to clean and reglazing is the only option to improve the appearance.

Bunnings have a panel you can fit between the 'door frame' and the actual (if its a slider). They are $250 ish and also double glazed.

Do you have a glass door in your garage these are usually single glazed. Then you could put a second flap in the internal garage door.

There is a good chance that the door will be safety glass and can't be cut.

Check if there is an etched label on the glass stating it is safety glass. Usually found on a bottom corner of the glass.

how easy is it to fit in the internal door to garage- a wooden door-

merrigj, Apr 5, 2:27am
Very easy as you can cut a square hole.

Thank you to all respondents to my question

You can't retrofit cat flaps into double glazing. You can get a glazier to re-make the bottom panel with a hole suitable for your catflap. Make sure the catflap is available when the glazier comes to measure. It'll be a few hundred dollars. If there's space near a wall (and your house isn't leaky-clad) then that would be a much easier option.

Yip as #16 says
Ring Glass joint, tell them you have a D/G panel you want a cat door in.
Its that easy.
One phone call
They will make a new one, You can pick from the cat doors they have :)
Wont be dirt cheap, but thats the price you pay to own animals i suppose.
