Fruit Trees - Pests & how you deal with them?

katelin1, Sep 20, 6:52pm
Hi team, Just doing some research into what WILDLIFE pests (birds, possums, rabbits etc - NOT bugs!) are most common for home garden fruit trees, and what tricky techniques people have used to deal with them? Thanks for your help!

is it corrogated iron up the base of a tree trunk to stop possums?

Sounds like a good idea!

Rabbits are a problem while trees are young and getting established, eating shoots off and also digging up the roots, we have found that a good repellent is egg, water and acrylic paint mixed and sprayed around trees,
6 eggs 600mls of water and 6mls of acrylic paint.

Anyone else got pest problems?!

Birds. waxeyes eat the fruit. I don't have much of an issue with it but ask any orchardist.

Any waxeyes here are welcome to any fruit they want, I wish! lots of other birds not so welcome.

We put a fence of shade cloth round the orchard with an electric fence wire half way up and also at the top. It stopped the possums instantly. once I had gotten the fruit we needed for preserving and jam we unelectrified it and left the little gate open.
