I am going to get a gasfitter to replace a gas hob with a very similar one, but does the gas bottle/storage have to be upgraded! It is presently a small bottle in the cupboard, which I understand is no longer permitted

Correct, gas bottles will need to be relocated outside, at least 1m from an drain or opening window.

My mate has his gas hob sitting on the top of his electric range.The gas bottle is in the oven.Now that is both kiwi no8 wire and stupid all at once IMHO.

Depends on size of gas bottle.The OP needs to talk to a gas-fitter.There's been plenty of wrong information posted on this forum on this subject.
