Have I left it too late to try to strike rose cuttings.!

Yes. Should have taken them when they were dormant. Much easier then. Try your hand at budding. Dead easy.

If you're given a cutting at the wrong time of year, it's still possible to strike it. Just make sure the cutting is in a gritty soil, kept well watered, and in a sheltered shady spot. I used a plastic bag over the entire pot to stop moisture loss - just open each day and turn the bag inside out before replacing it.

Cuttings taken at this time of the year, will often look like they have struck, because the leaves are growing, it's not till spring next year you find out all it's energies went into producing leaves and not roots, leaving you with a dead twig. Which is quite often true of the newer roses, the older roses seem to be able to strike more readily anytime of the year. It alo needs to be a cutting of last years wood, new growth won't strike.

Which is why you cut all leaves bar one spray off, and cut those leaflets in half, and place the pot in a damp cool shady area - that encourage root development rather than leaf. It doesn't always work though, so it pays to have several cuttings underway to maximise your chances.
