We have the same problem. We have a brand new brick home and they must get in via the small air holes that you have to have in brick homes for ventilation. My Father suggested putting bait in the holes, and I also commented that they would probably die in the walls and stink. He however said that they will come out of the walls looking for water and will die outside (the bait must make them really thirsty).

You can get little aluminuin screens to go over the air holes and paint them colour of house would sort the problem we have a new brick and plaster house and thats what we have.

We've had mice between the 1st & 2nd levels of the house in the past.so couldn't get bait up there to kill them. Plus we have chooks who free range (plus small children), so baiting outside wasn't an option. Exterminator put a powdered poison up through the light fittings. Problem solved within days.

Rats will often drag the bait away and it can end up anywhere
I buy the kind with a hole in teh middle, drive a nail into a joist or into a 16" board and drop the bait over the nail. That way I can check on teh bait to see if it is being taken, and I can remove it when the offenders have 'left'

Well my experience with dead rats in the walls, it takes longer than a few days for he smell to go, try 3 months! and no kidding eh! I got so desperate - one was under the kitchen bench in the cupboard, so I took to the wall with the knife, have to admit my hubby had to come to the rescue, got a bit much!

the poison usually makes them very thirsty so they aren't likely to die int he ceiling - of course all the babies WILL. So if you hear little sweuaking baby rats a few times a day after a rat can be heard returning with goodies - don't poison or you will have 8-12 rotten baby rats in your ceiling cavity. Do it in winter and then leave the poison in the roof. Or seal a cat up in the cavity.

Unless you plan to go up and collect the mothballs within a few days it is a bad idea.
They off gas for months and the vapour is heavier than air so it sinks into your house where it can poison you, will poison birds and fish , may poison children.
It is a very carcinogenic poison.

Good quality wax baits will do the job every time.If you are not sure then handle them using latex glovers to keep your human scent off them, and scrape some peanut butter over the outside surface to create a better smell to attract those rodents.

Get real canajanz1, we are talking about a few mothballs thrown around the attic to deter rodents not 2 ton of mothballs sitting up in your ceiling space. Gee our grand mothers used mothballs in our wardrobes and tallboys for years and we all survived, clothes smelled a bit, but still survived. hey the dangers of TOXIC RAT BAIT thrown around the house and the likleyhood of that comimg in contact with pets and kids is more prevelant that a rat picking up a mothball and storing it or taking it outside the house, rats won't go near the mothball.

Yeah, but your grans are all dead now- probably from undiagnosed mothball poisoning.
