Tomatoes Splitting

My cherry toms are ripening like mad but a few of them have split - someone told me it is too much watering and another person told me it is not enough! What do you think it is please!I am in Hawke's Bay and it has been very hot with little rain and I have been watering them regularly.

it's both too much water, and not enough water. In other words irregular watering.Left dry for too long, followed by extended periods of too wet etc.Tomatoes are tricky like that

Oh dear! They are in a raised bed so I wonder if they are drying out too much! Most of them are fine, about 5% split. So difficult this vege growing but so satisfying as well! Thanks for your help.

Next year, add heaps of compost. This will help retain moisture for those dry periods.

Not compost - mulch.

Thank you, I will do that.

Yes Mulch with peastraw it will hold moisture well reducing the amount of watering required and keep the soil moisture levels consistant rather than too dry or overwatering.
