Colours for your home?

Just doing a little bit of research here.
How do you chooses colours (paint, wallpaper etc) for your home!
If you get stuck where do you go!
Would you pay for someone( qualified interior designer/colour consultant) to come to your home to do a consult with you! Interior and exterior, if wallpaper was needed possibly a trip to the local design store to look at books. Or books brought to you!
If yes, how much would you want to pay!

NZ home and garden/house and garden magazines are marvellous to get you started on ideas.(Libraries have them)You will soon realise the colour effects you like best.A friend who loved blue and wanted her new home to have blue shades to base the scheme on,paid for a consultant,asking her to base it on blues-the consultant ignored the request and came back with all the latest look of neutral 'tea' shades! The best advice I heard of was to choose your curtains first,and take colours from that for the walls and carpets,and soft furnishings.You can often see that idea in the display windows of paint and curtain stores .For instance,the curtain fabric might be white background with designs in a colour you like,which you could paint one wall with,and the other walls white,or black and white.Go from there.Good luck!

PS-I see you are from Hamilton. I was thinking of the local 'Colour plus store'-on the left as you enter Morrinsville,when i mentioned display windows-they are really great in there and often have genuine'specials' of quality papers and paint.

Build a decorating/colour scheme by starting with your choice (and colour) offlooring and work upwards from there.

Yes we paid someone recently, $75 an hour, I was hoping for one hour but we ended up with 2 x 1 hour visits to choose wallpaper for the kids rooms too.
Tempted to get her back to help with the splashback and feature light colours but waiting until I have more than 2 questions to ask her so I don't waste my hour lol
