So it's traditionally tomato planting weather from now on but it's blowing a gale every day and we're supposed to get a frost Wed (Masterton).I've been trying to harden the tomatoes off on the deck but a couple of hours in the wind and they look ready to wither and die.I'm sick of the bloody wind and frosts!

labour day is early this year for some reason, though, isn't it usually the last weekend in Oct!Anyway, I'm not planting mine out this week. Our weather isn't very settled yet, expecting a frost tonight (Nelson) and had some freezing wind this week too. I've got a sheltered concrete patio where I put the toms and zucc etc during the day then back inside at night.

I needed a good laugh and now I've found it . "labour day is early this year".
I wonder if Christmas is in November. I'll have to check.

Ah, I hadn't thought about Labour Day being early, very good point.Unfortunately our deck cops the wind on each side when it's NW so no real sheltered spot.I'll just keep putting them out when I can though some are definitely big enough to plant out now.

I have mine in pots in a teeny tiny little sunporch, I dont dare put them outside at the moment because the wind is blowing a gale here in the Hutt. I even had to bring my poor wee pumpkin plants inside to save them from a battering. Ive had a zucchini die from the wind and my last two sunflowers are sheltering in water bottles so they dont get hammered =(

Next year Labour Day is the 28th, but I feel confident in saying Christmas Day will still be December 25th.

my tomatoes have been outside for a few weeks in a container. I bring them inside when the weather forecast is too extreme. They are doing well but I dont have enough plants. Might try and take cuttings and grow some more

When the laterals get to a inch or more long you can pull them off and plant them (enough people on here have said this so I'm betting it's true - I've never done it).

I am new to this gardening lark and planted my tomatoes about a month ago. Not realising I wasn't supposed to. They have survived a couple of mild frosts and are looking pretty good. Some flowers. Today I bought some more and was told not to plant them out yet as they hadn't been hardened off. Whoops

will try that thanks. I wonder if they need rooting hormone!

Im in Featherston and it always seems to be blowing a gale here. I planted mine a couple of weeks ago. I did put my big tomatoes in bamboo teepees. They did get blown over the first week.so I just hammered them in harder and they are still standing. What doesnt kill plants makes them stronger in my garden ;)
