I planted a Hawera and this would have been it's third year and we had wicked winds when the fruit was forming and lost them all.The fruit is delicious and I had great plans for the fruit this year. There wasn't a lot of fruit on the tree but enough for freezing and jam.I freeze pottles of cooked fruit for in winter and make many a delicious things.

I have always loved Greengages but never see them nowadays.

We have a Claude de Bavay greengage (which has a great reputation) yet they seem to be pretty tasteless to me.

purple king plum, my grandparents had one of these growing in the backyard when i was a kid. the plums are the size of tennis balls! they are sweet and juicy but the skin is quite tart. dont know what the would be like for cooking but off the tree, one of them was a meal. lol

I have a greengage tree and love the fruit lots of flavour. However the tree is very old and looking quite sick so don't know how much longer we will have it.

Hi Malcovy
Do you prune your Hawera tree.I have one too, and it is very tall, and has some fruit - not ripe yet - .Not had it in long - about a year I think.

and every bird within 10 miles agrees, our tree never had its usual dripping load for the first time and those that were there were huge, the birds have eaten the lot even though they are still quite green!

The wind has done some fine pruning for me.It is a tall tree so I was grateful for the natural pruning.I have worried it will be too big for my section but now I will keep it under control.
The first bite of the fruit was delicious and now I will have to wait till next year for fruit.Enjoy your fruit:-)
