There are 2 types, flowering cherries which are just decorative and actual fruiting cherries. Depends which sort you have.

flowering cherries do have small cherries, not much bigger than the pip.Birds love them - that's why you get so many cherry seedlings

birds (and my silly dog) eat them, so I suppose they must have some flavour, but they're not worth the effort, only about 1mm of flesh around the pip
