Can you use the two of these together, in series! Use the solar gain to warm the incoming water to the Gas hotwater system!

yes - but you still need a HWC - The trick with solar is to have lots and lots of storage ! the more the better - the idea is to take advantage of the sunny days and use some of that excess heat on the not so sunny days . Just had a customer yesterdayhe had one of our systems on his roof for the last 2 years ( 25tube panel /2 person household ) and he said he used his element maybe on 6-8 days last yearto boost the HWC temperature up a bit . so the question isdo you really need a gas back up for a solar system !. get the rigth setup - and you probably find a gas back up is a waste of money to install ( unless you use a heck of a lot of HW ) )

But with gas backup there is no waiting for a cylinder to reheat. If the solar didn't heat the cylinder enough, flick a switch and you have hot water straight away. Also useful if you don't have mains power, therefore can't have electric backup.

True , however for the odd occasions where you actually need to boost the HWC ( to heat it up ) its not worth the expense of using gass on it ( supply or bottle hire ) + cost of the gass heater . But as you said it depends a lot on there circumstances - ( and were they live ) talking about where they live ( central outgo)yepgas may be the way to go for a back up(:-) . while up here in the north islandyou dont really need a gas back up unless you live in a pretty cold spot and also use the gass for heating the house up
