Cancelling sky question.

cookiepnga, Jan 2, 3:51pm
If I cancel sky tv, can I receive 1,2 and 3 through the satellite dish or do I need a traditional aerial. Thanks.

tmenz, Jan 2, 3:54pm
Yes you can. If you purchase a Freeview satellite receiver/decoder set-top-box and connect it to your Sky dish, then you can receive all of the Freeview satellite channels. BUT they are standard definition only - you will not get HD on this service.

r.g.nixon, Jan 2, 3:54pm
I guess you can, but would need to point it at a different satellite!

cookiepnga, Jan 2, 4:37pm
Thanks. So it has to be a free view box does it!I take that a dish alone cannot transmit channels 123!

r.g.nixon, Jan 2, 5:12pm
The signal has to be decoded.

cookiepnga, Jan 2, 5:27pm
Righto. So the old aerial did all the decoding for channel's 123!

Shooting in the dark here, but my understanding is that your old aerial will still pick up those 3 channels until your area switches over to digital TV, so until then you will be able to recieve them.
Once digital TV only is available then you will need a freeview decoder box and the appropriate aerial. Type of aerial depends on where you live and signal recieved.
You may get away with a dish but they are subject to rain fade or a UHF aerial may be what you need.
Google freeview and locate your area on their guide. That will tell you when your area goes digital and what sort of aerial will suit you best.
I did this for my Mum and got a recommended UHF aerial only to find out down the track that she needed a dish, so it is not fail safe but will give you a starting place. Good luck.

P.S. There is still not much worth watching even with Freeview, all those channels and still mostly rubbish. lol

liggy2, Jan 2, 6:52pm
Dunno about that -there are some blardy good programs on tonight!

we've just discovered choice (ch 12) and quite enjoy it

The old aerial is/was for picking up analogue channels (1, 2, 3, 4, Prime, Maori etc.) which are/were separately transmitted and tuned in one at a time by TV sets with analogue tuners. As such they didn't need decoding.
The satellite signals picked up by the dish contain all the available channels which are digitally encoded and combined, (whether they are from Sky or Freeview), and need a digital tuner/decoder to decode, separate and select the individual channels from them so your TV can display them as required. The tuner decoder set-top-box required is either a Sky box or a Freeview box.
TV sets in New Zealand (old or new) cannot deal directly with satellite signals from a dish.

The SKY dishes can't transmit at all - they are only receive capable. There are dishes with LNBs that can transmit but they are generally used for communications purposes or for satellite internet etc.

lythande1, Jan 3, 5:45am
Once TV was analogue and an aerial was all you needed.
Sky is digital, and needed a satellite dish and a decoder.
Now all TV is to be digital. Freeview is the decoder for free TV.
You'll need either Freeview or SKy.

cookiepnga, Jan 3, 5:51am
Thanks guys. That explains it. Basically an extra, one off expense to watch the good old box.

t_naki, Jan 3, 7:27am
The TV does the decoding and most now have digital decoders for the UHF signal received by terrestrial aerials but they do not have decoders for a satellite signal so you will need a separate box for that. Once you set this up you will have access to all the Freeview channels as well, but I would still recommend to use the terrestrial service if you have an aerial and it is available.

i soooo wish freeview had a dedicated kids channel

t_naki, Jan 3, 8:10am
Me too, I got it because of Kidzone and then it shut down which was a bit of a bugger.

tmenz, Jan 3, 8:16am
That's right. Plenty of them around, new and second hand.
Lots here on Trademe.
Have a look at these sites for more information:

Don't forget alot of the newer TV sets have Freeview installed as part of their hardware, and as such don't require a separate Freeview box - just the UHF ariel . and some people are lucky and are able to make do with an amplified set of rabbit ears or even just plain old rabbit ear ariels instead of the UHF ariel and get good digital reception .

aloha3, Jan 11, 9:11pm
Most sets bought in the last 4 years have freeview and only need UHF ariel. If you do not have freeview just buy a box off here.
