Help with a weed in our lawn

maclad, Jan 2, 2:45pm
That looks like a grass to me and sprays specific to cleaning up turf won't kill grass. You may have to hand weed it out. It has probably grown because of the poor condition of your lawn, which has allowed the seed sunlight and room to grow. If your turf is kept thick and mowed slightly longer that will help keep future weeds out.

+1.Or you can spot it with roundup and a brush.

Damn I was hoping that would not be the case its a massive amount to weed.

The previous owner ready lawned the house to get it ready for sale but from when we signed the contract to when we took over they did nothing and so when we took over it was basically dead. I have been trying to get it back but this is may be the end of it.

Perhaps you could carry on mowing it a bit longer till the cooler weather comes and then over sow it. Hopefully with proper care the new lawn should grow well and with luck help smother the weedy grass out.
I hand weeded undesirable grass out of my lawn, took 1 to 1 1/2 years but worked. Surprising how much you can remove in 10 mins or so when you have them spare.

We did this a few years ago too when we had a Blue couch(pronounced cooch) lawn in Townsville. It was a mission initially but well worth it in the long run.Once the 'good stuff' is going well, weeds become fewer and fewer.

that lookslike paspalum.

maclad, Jan 2, 6:09pm
Not paspalum, that is not how it presents. Looks like one of the more soft grasses

Have you checked the root system that it is not a tuberous weed of some sort!

t_naki, Jan 2, 7:22pm
I don't think it is it just has a normal looking root.

t_naki, Jan 2, 7:23pm
Would that mean I could get a selective spray for it!

piquant, Jan 2, 8:04pm
No. There are broadleaf sprays for weeds and there are sprays which will kill grasses. To my knowledge there are no sprays that will kill selective grasses within other grasses. Maclad is right in saying that these stronger, hardier grasses will come through when finer lawn grasses are under stress (drying out with these summer winds etc) and the sward is cut too short. Set your mower blades higher (all year) feed your lawn regularly and possibly use a mulching mower to assist with retaining moisture.

Barnyard grass.
Extremely difficult to get rid of.

wheelz, Jan 2, 10:07pm
Looks like what is commonly called Summer Grass, proper name Digitaria Sanguinalis

the-lada-dude, Jan 3, 6:26am
marijuana!

Looking at your picture again. I think I have a number of the same weeds come up but not in my lawn. they have appeared in a relatively shaded shrub garden. I pulled them out and they seem to have a strong looking root. I transplanted them in a bunch into a rubbishy spotto see what they grow into
