Lawnmaster mower problem not catching grass

pom4, Dec 15, 7:55am
My lawnmaster mower is only a year old and I have a very small lawn, recently i have had problems with the clippings getting clogged up around the blades. Its not throwing the clippings in the catcher.
I've given it a good clean up but still no better.
Any ideas before I take it in to get repaired?

Blades not sharp enough? Not clean enough? Lawn too wet? Too long?

I dunno I am just brainstorming here. what’s a lawnmaster?

replace the blades

Remove the catcher and let the grass compost on the lawn.

Blade issue, you haven't got it on backwards have you?
Or it's blunt.

Or it is loose on the shaft.

Does the catcher have a metal 'tongue' at the front that fits into the bottom of the clippings ejection chute and effectively forms a duct for the clippings? If so, has this got bent up so it's blocking the chute rather than assisting it? This has happened on my Lawnmaster catcher in the past.

muppet_slayer, Dec 16, 1:03am
Yeah the curved up piece on the end of the blades controls the 'throw' of the clippings. Some times the blade breaks that curved piece off.

You sure there is nothing wrong with the blades?

or it could be as #7 says. The tongue of the catcher could be dislodged and not sitting correct and blocking the 'chute'.

Our lawnmaster had one year of use and then the motor died. Found out it had a oil leak and it was deemed our fault. It cost over $1000 to purchase new last year. Hubby was furious I was annoyed and after all this the masport mower is still ticking along as good as gold.

sounds like not fit for purpose - CGA?

toyboy3, Dec 16, 2:48am
Are you using the engine on full throttle?

marte, Dec 16, 2:57am
Cabbage tree leaves wind around the shaft, move up & force themselves up under the seal & open it up & dump the oil out. If you ever get a circle of oil while mowing, on your lawn, this happened.

OP, if it's got the blade tip bolted onto the blade, make sure it's loose & not flipped back & locked up on the blade/bar.
Worn flaps, it needs that upward 'curve' behind the blades cutting edge.
Blade tips are cheap on trademe
The flap on the catcher has gotten worn or chomped off & bypassing air.
Full throttle?
Mower set too high?
The metal bar across where the catcher sits is bent & catches clippings untill it blocks the catcher?

strathview, Dec 16, 9:18am
That is what they told us however we don't have cabbage trees so we were back to square one. There wasn't anything wrapped around the shaft so that didn't make sense either. Hence why hubby was furious. Needless to say the Stihl shop isn't getting anymore business.

How often did you check the oil level?

elect70, Dec 18, 10:04pm
Make sure the vents in the catcher are clear it makes a difference & clean the underbody of the mower

Really? . As I said the good old masport that we have had for many years is still going strong. We just think we got a dud lawnmaster and they don't want to replace it. We are very good at servicing our machinery and the lawnmaster was still under warranty so they serviced it. We thought it was odd at the time we picked it up that they said it looked like we had given it a hard time. This particular shop have been servicing our masport mower and our old Rover mower for over 20 years. We retired the Rover because it was 27 years old and it was getting difficult to get parts for it. We took our old masport to a different repair shop to get it looked at just in case and they said our masport was in good shape for a very old mower. It really has us wondering. The newer masport mower is going great as is the old one.

Flax leaves can do the same, but may not stay wrapped around the drive shaft after doing damage to the oil seal.

Was the drive shaft 'wet' with oil, or any oil patches around the area where the drive shaft exits the engine?

If you have a fabric catcher they need a good wash , from time to time. Especially if used in dusty conditions. MY two lawnmasters that I just sold were well used commercially. Blades kept sharp, front of catcher straightened and catcher fabric washed regularly and they caught grass well.

HATE those factory plastic catchers, clog easy & sods to empty
Yep same here when I was contract mowing.
Yep always hose the fabric bags after mowing & they work well.
Also same thoughts on the catcher front panel, the tip should be level with the bottom lip of the mower body

mrfxit, Dec 31, 7:35pm
Good point but as a brand new home mower, you should only need a yearly oil check before summer each year, (about the same time for an oil change) unless of course you have flax etc to cope with.

strathview, Aug 30, 12:15am
Ok what are the plants that can ruin a mower? No cabbage trees and no flax (hate the stuff) I have to admit I didn't like to use the lawnmaster as it had a different mower noise which annoyed me. The motor never sounded right and when I raised this with the shop they brushed it off and said it was fine.
