We have to buy a new electric Oven!

mrelijah, Aug 31, 6:28pm
Any suggestions re brands?
Electric, nothing fancy. It has to replace a free standing oven.

Thanks in advance.

Get a popular brand from your local retailer that will honour any warranty claims.

I wouldn't recommend the oven we bought a year ago. It's an Award brand 60cm free standing oven with the solid hotplates. The temperature dial for our oven is so loose that it could be heating up 15-20 degrees either side of the temp I actually want. And while their manual explains what all 7 functions do, it doesn't have any diagrams. Of the 7 pics on the function dial I've only worked out which is the bake, fan and a single grill options!

Depends on your cooking style / frequency etc
If the cook cannot bend over , it might be better to look at the free standing stoves with a warmer draw and higher oven etc
westington house coil elements, grill and lower oven

In order of least repairs I have had to do over the years I would say F&P then Westinghouse then Simpson for free standing stoves.
F&P because the elements on top are wired in & not pull out elements like Westinghouse/simpson ones. Pull out elements burn out more often. Anything else is cheaper but like anything else. Cheap means not built to last. Buy cheap ones at your own peril. You will regret it later.

Go to the local library and see what the 'consumer' magazine has to say on the subject.

We bought a Westinghouse, smooth top. Not expensive. Has a separate grill which I really like.

I wouldn't recommend Award either. we had a new kitchen put in 3 years ago, and it came with Award appliances. The gas stove top had a problem from day one that the installer fixed, the electric stove packed up 10 days after it's 2 year warranty, and Award would have nothing to do with it, and the range hood still works but is very noisy.

Would never buy Parmco cookware ever again!

Or purchase the test report/s. Small investment for larger purchases.

Bosch for sure. Costs a bit more than most but there is a reason for that.

Had Parmco for years with no problem at all. Perhaps it was better quality when we bought them.

Oh, please can you tell me why? - We were looking at Parmco for a new build. - we have a 13yo 900mm parmco rangehood, still going strong! If the quality has degraded i'm not very interested.

I'm on my second 900mm oven, only because the first one had so many issues, I demanded a new one to replace it. It died about 4 weeks later it was installed, right before Christmas, so i couldn't host it that year. I had numerous call outs before the I got the second one, which Parmco gave me without any quibbling to their credit. With the second one, have had two/three? callouts with that after three years. I have a Parmco rangehood - it's rubbish, but glad you are happy with yours. Will be buying a Bosch or something really good when I get my new kitchen.

Friend told me not to get the add-on pyro something cleaning. she said that she used it once and never again, also said that her new oven no longer looked new after she had used it. It's that thingie where you heat the oven to very VERY hot and all the mess inside burns off. Easier to wipe it clean. so I didn't and perfectly happy with my AEG fan etc oven.

I've just bought a secondhand F&P which I'm very pleased with so far, it is a wall oven though but I expect the technology is similar. (I would highly recommend secondhand as you save a ton off the new price, and dealers clean them up and test them).

It is however very noisy, and the fan runs for 10-20 minutes after you turn the oven off, to cool it down(! ). I was prepared for this as I had read about it beforehand in user reviews, and apparently a lot of ovens produced lately so this. If you have an open plan kitchen dining living area this might be something to consider. (Whatever happened to ovens cooling down unassisted?! What a waste of power. )

Also - it is a couple centimetres narrower inside, which means all my awesome big oven trays from the last oven can't be used as they don't fit, which I'm salty as hell about! So check the measurements if you have large ovenware that you're attached to, and ask what accessories will come with it, especially if you're buying secondhand as often they aren't included. Good quality trays cost an arm and leg to replace.

Check out the prices on ovens from Trade Depot or your local store selling “end of line” or “slightly damaged” goods - my daughter saved $700 on a washing machine because of a tiny dent in the side (which you don’t see anyway) and $1000 on a fridge freezer because of a scratch at the bottom of the door that you’d only see if you were lying in the floor!

I’ve just bought the most basic Haier oven - not freestanding but it does all I need it to do - bakes and grills. Only issue I have with it is that there aren’t enough racks (one rack and the grill tray) so I kept one from my old oven that was the same size.

I have a Bosch fridge freezer - only 6 years old and the bottom door is starting to rust.

Award- Do not bur. Mine was replaced in the first week. Lasted 18 months that. Sadly it was recommended to me by my electrician as it was NZ made and he felt they were good !

Buy SECOND HAND ;-)

Replace your own pile of junk with someone elses pile of junk? How does that work?
