Smelly Toilet

starseeker, Jul 21, 4:41pm
Hold a small hand mirror under the rim of the toilet & look for staining. There can be a build-up of mould if the porcelain glazing does not go right up. Even if you regularly spray toilet bowl cleaner into this area it may not reach it all. The answer to this problem is to wear old clothes, rubber gloves (& protective eye wear in case of splashes) & paint a strong solution of bleach such as Domestos up into the area. Make sure the area is well ventilated as you work. Leave for at least an hour & then flush

Toilet Smells Like: Rotten Eggs or Sulfur
it means there are bacteria in the water.
This problem can be fixed by replacing the drains or disinfecting them to eliminate the smell.

Toilet Smells Like: Sewage
the most common is an issue with the p-trap.
Sometimes, however, the p-trap allows these gases to escape via a leak, a broken seal, or infrequent use.

Toilet Smells Like: Urine
a constant urine smell is likely due to a leaking seal, which is located under the toilet and seals the point between the toilet and the drain.

Yes, but you forgot to say that the result is sewage odour in the room.

Can also be made worse if some building work has been put up close to the vent pipe exit and it is no longer the required height above the adjacent roof

Putty stuff drying out where the toilet is sealed into the pipe that takes your stuff away--right behind the toilet in or case many years ago, so got some stuff to reseal it.

We have a horrible smell coming from the toilet itself. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of it. The other toilets in the house are fine.

Is the waste connection visible or concealed? Any chance that it is leaking?
Is the water level in bowl high enough to block sewer gas? Is the smell coming in the window? Do you have someone whose aim could be better?

Had same issue. Did all of above plus cleaned cistern, cleaned and cleaned. Ultimately it was a dead mouse against the wall directly behind the toilet in an adjoining room.

Take the toilet seat off and wash the fittings on it, and also where they are fitted to the bowl?

sstraight, Jan 3, 9:08am
Can’t see or feel any leaks, the smell isn’t coming from the window and no children use the toilet and hubby’s aim is good. It is a possibility that the water level is high. How would you fix that.

budgel, Jan 3, 10:32am
The water level in the bowl cant be adjusted because it is governed by the shape of the s bend. If there is water in there, it is doing its job. unless part of the bowl is broken. Check the seal where the bowl joins the pipework, also maybe under the house if it has a wooden floor.

Sometimes wind across the top of the vent pipe "bounces" the water in the trap and it ends up too low.
