Might be easier to put a lock at the top of the door so they can't open it by themselves

If your 2 year old can open a lock at the top of the door I doubt that a fence is going to keep them in for long, perhaps there are other options.

So you've been in a Housing NZ house for 5 years and have a 2 year old. do you have other children?

We lived in a Housing NZ house for years. My parents eventually purchased it. Was the only one in the small settlement. It was many moons ago.

its a requirement all hcnz homes have fenced areas. Ask for a security door on the front door that the 2year old cannot reach.

It is not. It is up to the parents to mind their kids, plenty of people who own can't afford to do a fence too.

Would have to be incredibly tall 2 y.o. Install a security chain at the top - standard doors are 1.98 m. high - or lock the door.

You need one that needs a key to open it then. A fence will not solve all your issues, some kids are escape artists and you need eyes in the back of your head.

perhaps you could move to a house that has a fence

I think you need to look at other options rather than building a fence with free wood. You would still need concrete and all the other materials to build it, not cheap. A lock with a key that you wear around your neck so the kid can't unlock the door.

Do you have a fence at back and side boundaries? If so, perhaps use strong wire netting or something between house and fence both sides to fence backyard off, and as above lock front door securely somehow. I have a hook and eye high up on my door between house and garage to prevent children from going there. Even if a young child stood on a chair they would not reach it.

Or perhaps instill some degree of discipline into your two year old kid. What will he be like when he's 8 or 12 if he doesn't do what he's told at 2yrs?

i was thinking that too,fix the behavior rather than build things around him to curb that bad behavior.

Get a Tower bolt from Bunnings and put it up at the top of the door.
