Fixing a running toilet?

deendon1, Aug 3, 9:44am
Quick question (kind of DIY since my you tube inspired DIY fix didn't work! ) how much does it cost?

water is running down the back of the pan rather than outside or over the top

thanks

Its the floaty bit inside the WC,
Back in the 70s I went for a year before finally fixing it, and it cost about $5 Did it 20yrs ago and it was under $20 for the bit, so guess allow $40 max. Take photos of what you have to buy the right bit and shape/design,
Do an online check before you buy some of these chain stores get a week in fiji on what they are charging compared to others

The "floaty bit" is the inlet valve. If the cistern is overflowing because the level is too high it will be the inlet valve seal. If the cistern isn't over full it could be the outlet or flush valve. The flush valve also has a seal or it could be the button linkage jamming.

I found a piece of dirt under the large washer was preventing a seal. Quick fix.

Sometimes it's a simple matter of adjustment but often it's more economical to get a new cistern, the valves can be expensive in some.

I have some butanol sheet that I make new valve seals with. The seals should cost about 20 cents.

i replaced a washer in mine. all sorted.

A friend of mine got a plumber to replace the washer in her cistern. It ended up costing $600, and my friend went to the banking ombudsman and got $300 back, because the plumber kept presenting her cheque many times after the bank stuffed up.

+1
turn the water off. if it stops flowing down the toilet then its the inlet valve leaking. if it dosn't stop then its the flush valve.

for common makes models there is replacement seals available and also complete inlet valve units.

i just did my inlet valve the other day. water was turned off at the street and a lot of the taps started leaking.
the toilet was just a matter of cleaning the inlet valve surface.

just be aware there can be difference in seal sizes from different seal manufactures and that can make a big difference.

Thanks all, I'd tried the DIY fix of adjusting the screw to change the height of the float, sort of worked but then cistern emptied and refilled so the problem was worse than ever.

Got a plumber and have been charged $350 which was disappointing (for replacement outlet valve and underwater washer). I'd seen the price of new toilets in Bunnings and thought I could have had a new one for not much more.
(this is a really old one so I was disappointed to have to spend so much fixing something that was so old) hope that makes sense

some of the old ones are better than the new ones.

Well I did warn you that many plumbers will vastly overcharge.

Its usually a very easy fix. It is very likely a big rubber washer inside the cistern. They are only a few bucks at Bunnings, but write down what make the cistern is. Look on youtube to see how its done. Usually the mechanism just rotates anticlockwise a bit and can be lifted out (Turn off inlet valve before starting). sometimes the old washer will have blisters or some wear or dirt under it, but its good to replace it anyway. Compare washers before opeing the package so you can return/swap if its wrong. About a 10 minute job

Yeah, we shoulda checked and pointed out that it's either the top washer in the ballcock valve.
And it's either worn out or has rust under it ( from steel piping somewhere, but often after works been done upstream ).

Or, it's the seal in the centre it that releases the water in the tank to flush the toilet.

Turning the inlet tap off at the cistern and slightly flushing it would have tested the ballcock valve washer.

Sometimes that washer can be taken out & reversed and it works again. It's good to buy a new one at that time too.
