Best paint for a Kitchen?

soundsgood, Feb 13, 4:47am
I plan to paint the walls, window frames, door frame (not cupboards) and trim.

Having found water based paints less than great in previous jobs I was looking at using Dulux Super Enamel High Gloss - oil based for the window frames, door frame (not cupboards) and trim. But I see that their AquaEnamel that they recommend for walls is water based.

What have other people used and what would you use if you had to paint a kitchen again?

I'm old fashioned. Oil based enamel that is scrubbable.

And pale butter yellow, with denim blue!

Hi soundgood, I would use Dulux semi gloss enamel (oil based). If you go for high gloss enamel, you will need to use oil based undercoat under the enamel. Semi gloss is just 2 coats over sanded previous paint. Don't forget to wash down well. Peter

I always use Resene supergloss for the window frames. Have used water based in the past, but achieved poor longevity.

I plan to use Selley's Suger Soap for the wash down.

Part of the area to be painted is polished (fading) wood strips, so I am expecting to have to both sand and under coat those parts anyway. Sounds like I'll need a small can of oil based primer.
The window frames and doors are both painted and from the quality it must have been oil based.

I don't mind how long it takes or how slow I need to go.

My big question is what to put on to the painted walls, which are matt. Which paint to use there. Is there a good oil based matt finish for those areas,or should I used a semi gloss?

The walls will be a different colour (I am told) so could even be a different brand.

That pale butter yellow is the colour your kitchen ceiling goes after a few fry-ups.

Nope. When I had that kitchen I was nimble enough to wash the ceilings.

Oh those were the days!

If you want to find out if the paint is water or oil based, put some meths on a rag and rub the surface, and if the colour transfers to the rag its water based. Taubmans still do Gaylon interior enamel with a satin finish, which is somewhere between low sheen and semi gloss.

Sounds good. Have you ever used it?

I havent used it personally, though my parents always did when doing their kitchen, bathroom or laundry walls. Its a paint that's been round for years.

I found out today that Dulux also have a matt/low sheen oil based paint - but only in their professional range. I also found out today that Dulux have a professional range!

I see that there is a Taubman's stockist quite close. I'll see what they have to offer on Monday.

Well the man at the Wattyl shop said that they don't do the Gaylon anymore.

So now it''s down to Resene or Dulux commercial offerings for oil based low-sheen options.

Nothing wrong with waterbase paints. it's all in the prep. Nobody paints the outside of houses with oil base anymore, so what does that tell you? Oil base paints can yellow over time. I personally like Resene lustacryl but there is a bit of a technique to brushing.it on. Stay away from Dulux aqua enamel it's horrible. too chalky imo.

If you insist on oil Resene lustaglo is nice to use.
