I am about to get a new roof put on - Coloursteel Endura. I also need new gutters. Can someone tell me which is the best type for Auckland conditions:

- 1/4 round coloursteel Maxx, OR
- PVC

Thank you.

Hi dee238, you are best to match them to your roof size/slope/eve width etc. If you go into one of the specialist plumbing shops such as Chesters or Kumeu Plumbing, they would be able to give you good advice, as they stock the gutter systems. :) - We have just been through this exercise too.

PVC, it won't rust.

zirconium - thank

I have been told that:

PVC - won't rust, will become brittle over time (though mine hasn't) and water can come through joins if not sealed properly (though the last is for the roofer to ensure it is sealed properly), but this did happen to mine eventually.

Coloursteel Maxx - is treated and shouldn't rust but can be scratched easily. I don't live near the sea.

Color steel gutters leak at the joins after 10-15years when the silicone breaks down

I did Marley myself about 35 years ago and still going strong

I've had good long term results with Marley.

Longrun copper. Lasts forever, looks a million dollars and requires no maintenance.

I install colour steel gutter on new houses everyday
Everything from cheapish town houses to million dollar houses in chch.
Any body who puts pvc gutter on there houses needs there head read.
Colour steel is stronger
Wont go brittle with age
Wont have a join every 3mtrs or so
Dosnt need painting if you want other than white
Dosnt need those ugly fittings that cost $30 each every where you need a downpipe dropper
Over all will be cheaper
Dosnt need a $5 bracket every 450mm

My coloursteel skyline garage guttering built in 1996 is fubar'd ( 25 years ) .
Think I'll replace with Marley

nzshooter01, Apr 17, 7:33am
Has it been cleaned out regually?
Any colour steel gutter left with leaves etc sitting in it wont do well.

martin11, Apr 18, 11:06am
That depends on where it is in NZ .

I use galv steel gutters which my ladder can rest against. Plastic is a problem.

martin11, Apr 18, 3:56pm
I clean a lot of gutters and plastic is not a problem if you are careful metal is worst as it scratches easily .

apollo11, Apr 18, 5:15pm
but you are now down to one bollock lol.

apollo11, Apr 18, 5:18pm
It would only last ten minutes in South Auckland.

the biggest problem with metal guttering, particularly in high rainfall areas, is INCORRECT installation, use of a level and string line to get enough fall, and enough outlets, and keep them clean, pine needles appear to be one of the worst as they sit there and mix with water and seem to make an acid, which is the beginning of the end.

It won't last long if visable from the road.

Hi. Thank you everyone.

I ended up going to a few plumbing specialists. They said there are good and bad with both, e.g. correct installation of both is essential, coloursteel will rust eventually but with regular maintenance that would take awhile, PVC is easier to repair as any plumber would be able to do the section that is required to be repaired, whereas with coloursteel you would need a roofer. They all said that the most popular guttering sold is Marley.

Taking all into account and after talking to people, I've decided to go with PVC. Gee, I hope this is the last time I have to re-roof my house - lol.

I agree. I had a cleaning business and I came across many gutters that were completely clogged due to the guttering being installed higher than the downpipes. Use a laser level or any other method to ensure the gutters flow down. Have plenty of downpipes and have them cleaned often. I found that products like gutter whiskers did not work.

trade4us2, Apr 19, 3:46pm
You are correct. Our Coloursteel spouting in the Waitakeres rusted after a few years so we replaced it with PVC. Our copper tank on the roof was stolen.
Don't use copper! My neighbour's copper downpipes were stolen 5 times. I have video and rego number of the thieves but the cops won't act.

nzshooter01, Apr 19, 5:05pm
I hope it works well for you,
Plumbers today wouldnt know much about guttering, 40 yrs ago plumbers fitted gutter, mainly galv gutter on timber fascia, not so now as most fascia is coloursteel as well. the people to talk to are roofing companys, note, not roofers as such.
Plumbing supply companys would sell mainly pvc because they are selling to diy people fitting it to older houses.
100% of new houses built in chch have coloursteel guttering, fitted by contractors like myself, not plumbers

Some things about galv I never knew, especially the self healing.

That explains why old roofing iron (UK or Oz) lasts so long.

martin11, Jul 31, 11:51pm
The old Lysart Corr Iron was a galvanized product but that di get affected by the Leadhead nails through electrolys
