Replacing Shower Sealant

pato1, Jul 26, 1:50pm
Who would I get to replace mouldy existing sealant around shower tray. I presume a plumber wouldn't be interested in such a small job. I don't think it is a job for an amateur.?

happychappy50, Jul 26, 2:19pm
A handyman would be ok,too small for a plumber, try a tiler, like most situations depends on the person doing the job, then again it is diy if you feel comfortable.Cut out old silicone with a blade, clean off with meths & use a neutral cure silicone in the colour of your choice

Thanks. No I don't feel confident to undertake the job.

Some plumbers would, my husband for one.

If I spray the sealant with bleach every time I use the shower, after a few weeks the mould goes away.

That is interesting, perhaps I will try one of the many plumbers in the area.

LOL, look forward to paying for a couple of hrs at $80 a hr plus vehicle

krames, Jul 26, 7:39pm
carpenters will also do it, but you will need to contact a builder to get one

wine-o-clock, Jul 26, 8:47pm
someones missus could probably do it as well-its not that hard

Call the local Real Estate that does rentals. They have all the trades on their books that do this work

cwag, Jul 27, 10:49am
There is a company called Grout Pro who specialise in doing this.

If you consider d-i-y, buy 2 tubes and practice first on something else. Cost of another tube would be less than paying a trades-person.

Yes, I've done this, no worries, just a bit of patience and a throughly dried out shower box (which is harder than you think).

biggles45, Jul 27, 12:10pm
I have done it recently. Put masking tape either side of the sealer line (that's actually the hardest bit getting the tape straight)! Run sealer along between the two tapes, dip finger into turps and run finger along the sealer, remove tapes.

use exit mould, you can buy it in the supermarket - totally recommend, i had the same issue, someone told me to try it, never looked back since, bathroom looked brand new

trade4us2, Jul 27, 12:27pm
Exit Mould is the same as Janola or the Budget bleach. When the Janola spray bottle is used up, take the top off with a pipe wrench and fill it up with Budget bleach thinned 50% with water. They don't want you to do this, so they make it difficult to get the top off the bottle.

You don't need a tradesman to spray your shower sealant.

When applying the correct SHOWER SEALANT, ensure you apply it only to the OUTSIDE of the shower with a GLOVED hand. It is that simple.

Ensure all surfaces are clean and dry.

malcovy, Jul 27, 4:36pm
Yes never use a bare finger as that is where the dark discolouration comes from.

omamari, Jul 27, 5:50pm
Masking tape and turps is the best advice you have received, but never use a bare finger, that deposits bacteria. I use toilet paper (unused) around my finger and dipped in turps

Thanks for all the suggestions that were helpful.
