Ceiling Batts

We have an upstairs section of the lounge which exposes the open beams below above an open porch area. We will put batts between the beams - DO WE HAVE TO COVER OVER THE BATTS - or is it OK exposed. We also have batts exposed under the bottom storey of the house beams, i.e. not covered with plastic or anything and the ground is perfectly dry under there.

Anyone installing Batts uses protective clothing, mask and glasses. It's made of fibreglass I think, so do you want to be breathing in that?

i can't understand your description.
you need to explain it better of post pictures.

if your talking about an exposed beam ceiling then the batts needs to go between the underlay (without touching the underlay) and the ceiling panel. there is typically special insulation for that.

under the house, i would not recommend batts.
also i highly recommend a ground sheet over the dirt. that reduces moisture that is going into your house. dry dirt means the the water is evaporating and going into the air. then its going into your house.

I would use expos underfloor insulation. It will push into place easily it won’t have issues with moisture or dust.

i agree.
however it needs to be installed tight and well sealed. like all insulation if air can get around the edges it makes it useless.
on older homes with wonky timber or a lot of different sized spacing, it becomes very difficult to install it well.

i prefer polyester which is easy to push up against odd shaped timber and staple it into place. its not great with water but not quite as bad as batts.

As I read the OP, the area they want to insulate is actually outside. A total waste of time and money putting insulation there if so.
