Colour Advice please?

I am in a quandry! We were looking at getting a new kitchen but thanks to a fish tank accident and 400 litres of fishy water on the carpet, we are getting new carpet instead. Long story, but basically 15 year old carpet so insurance will only clean and dry carpet which would cost the same as the excess, so may as well put that money into the new carpet which was 'on the list'.
Our kitchen/family room is open plan. The walls of the family room are resene's White Pointer, and the kitchen is 'wheat', a pale yellowish colour. Goodness knows what I was thinking 17 years ago when I picked it! Instead of replacing the kitchen I was thinking I might just paint the kitchen walls a colour that will go with both the White Pointer and kitchen cabinets. Any suggestions? I was thinking a mid grey colour? The carpet we have chosen is a mid/dark grey called Montreal from Harrisons.

Thanks for any advice!

we have Madison, mid/dark grey from harrisons, its not really dark, doesnt show dirt easily and is neutral, and we have a totally open plan house. Id put the carpet in first then pick a paint colour for the kitchen depending on how the carpet colour affects the way the rest of the room looks.

How are the fish doing

The fish all survived the initial leak. Happened at midnight and was only found as my youngest got up for a midnight visit to the toilet and heard something so went to investigate. We lost three fish over the next few days as they were in the temporary tank and so pretty stressed. Still, probably at least 50 survived so all good!

I'd do White Pointer there as well. I love that colour.
With the kitchen - as you are spending the kitchen money on the carpet - you could look at just replacing the kitchen cupboard doors and draw fronts and side panels. And a new bench top. Keeping the same carcasses or under cupboards. This can save a lot of money on a kitchen renovation. I did this in one of our properties and it looks like a brand new kitchen. I like white kitchens as they don't date. And a white kitchen will look great with the White Pointer walls.
