Hi guys, my title is pretty self explanatory but i have a kitset carport that i want to put up, i'm not going to lay a pad so will put in footers but i'm unsure how to make the footings level on a slight sloping section. TIA

You have the right idea, getting it level is obvious. If it is not level the water in the guttering may not go down the down pipes. Others will give you a range of sound and whacky idea's how to achieve what you want.

I did the water/garden hose with a funnel on each end as a reservoir. sorted out a 7x6 skyline that had SEVEERly sagging concrete base. was 350mm in one corner. Propped up the base plate with 5 or 6 or 7lengths 4x2. Then the tilt door worked again. ! So (bottom line) a simple idea done carefully, can be quite accurate. I was within 1.cm Sadly as this is Tokoroa the tilt has started again.

That's how they got the pyramids base level, with water.

Just use a normal level and some string.

If you use a laser or builders' 'dumpy' level it is best to site the instrument in the middle of the site (building) to take your readings. That way if it is out of callibration the results will still be correct, because all of the readings will be of similar length so 'out' by the same amount.
During 35 years of surveying experience I've seen my fair share of tilted buildings due to blind faith in uncallibrated levels. Some on large scale projects where the contractor should have known better!

Water in a clear tube works well but make sure there are no bubbles in it.

water in a clear tube works well IF you add a small amount of meths ( breaks the surface tension) or a few drops of dishwash ( breaks the surface tension) otherwise can be out by 5 - 10 mm depending on how far the points are apart - the larger the tube the better too

You can hire laser levels or automatic levels from hirepool etc. And follow the advice in post 7 - it is sound.

Thank you guys, appreciate the help.

if you dont want to hire a laser then just use a good quality spirit level upon a 3m straight edge , drive pegs for height transfer
another idea is to forget about levelling , dig your holes roughly in the correct place and suspend the entire carport off the ground , spirit level the structure , and then pour the postholes - this way the set out , plumbing of posts ,levelling etc are at your leisure
