I'm having a carport attached to the side of my existing garage.
does anyone have info on how close I can build to the boundary?

Your local council is the authority. Don't rely on guesses or old information.

I would say about 2 meters, although I have had one on the boundary for 30 years that I put up. yea local regs if you can be bothered. load of rubbish really. But hey that's the control councils and governments like to have.

My one in Rangiora is 100mm off the boundry and has a Building Consent ,built a few years ago now .

From the Acceptable Solution C/AS1 for the Building Code5.5 Carports and similar construction
A carport is permitted to have walls and roof with 100% unprotected area provided that all the following conditions are met:
a) At least two sides are completely open to the environment, and
b) The carport and adjacent building are under the same ownership, and
c) For a roof plan area of no more than than 40 m2, no part of the roof is closer than 0.3 m to a relevant boundary.

If the above requirements are met then you comply with the building code
But as a previous poster suggested ask your council as there may be some Planning rules to comply with as well

Interesting, this looks like why a builder wouldnt provide screen between ours and the neighbouring house. Actually for their good - we are the untidy ones.
