Rose problem.

I have a problem with one of my roses, the stems are covered in a white powder. It comes off easily but underneath the powder there is hard white lumps. Anyone know what this might be and how to treat it please. Thanks. :)

Sounds very much like scale insect, best treated with a good insecticide and a spraying oil such as conqueror. The oil will suffocate the blighters but they will still remain on the plant, even tho dead for a long time. Best sprayed 3 weekly for 3 or 4 times. Clean up all leaves off ground and spray soil as well.

Is all purpose spraying oil different to conqueror?

Does the same job, good luck. You could also spray them with lime sulphur once they have lost all their leaves, which also helps. Just make sure there are no plants around which are not tolerant to lime sulphur, generally evergreens and soft leaf plants like annuals.
