I rent a property and have been told if I pay for it then I can put it up. I am in a front flat and my front fence is less than 1.5 in height so have absolutely no privacy if I want to sit outside. I have enlisted my daughter to help as my hubby passed away so I am keen for any advice someone is willing to give us ie what size timber to brace it with and what nails etc to use. Thank you in advance.

You'll have to post photos of the area/existing fenceline and corners, otherwise it'll be a game of politically-uncorrect whispers.
While not exactly what your job is, it'll give you a clue about the general direction. Don't be too scared of the epensive tools, it can be done simpler and cheaply. Go into Mitre ten or Bunnings and tallk to their people - take photos, it's easier than you think.

Depends where you live - some Local Bodys won't allow fences on the street of over 1200 high. Their bizzare argument is that full view in from the street is required for 'security' reasons. just in case you may be harbouring a mass murderer or somesuch.

I tried nailing trellis to the top of a fence and the wind blew it over, neighbour bought a full length trellis and stood it next to the fence and bolted in which stays put but more expensive.

Thanks for the replies . I think I could do herc18's idea but will definitely go to Bunnings and have a chat so thank you :-)

It depends if the top of the fence is straight or is stepped down a slope. If stepped, it's easy to build a frame to put the trellis on.
