Heat pump reinstallation

northwestie, Jan 27, 11:14pm
Hi. Has anyone had a heat pump reinstalled after a renovation? Just want an idea on costs. The outdoor unit is still in place. The indoor unit, piping, new electrics to and from the outdoor unit, switchboard will need to be reconnected. Can anyone recommend an installer? Thanks and appreciate it.

Who disconnected / un-installed it?

sure are some idiots out there, so depends on what was done.
Was it pumped down and pipes sealed? lots of other variables too, so best get quotes if you do not want to use remover again.

Did an install today, because an idiot builder removed indoor for painting and wall work, and lost all the gas charge. Being an old non inverter gree on r22 gas, it was determined to be uneconomic to refit, so she decided to go with a replacement r32 toshiba system.

is that the year it would apply to as well.

Exactly.

Although as soon as they say Gree, it's a new unit or leave it for the next fool.

we have had quite a few 2nd hands ones installed. all gas pumped into unit and sealed.
however one we had installed i had to remove due to renovations and the guy couldn't get there quick enough. pipes left open as it wasn't to be used again.
but then the replacement didn't show up. so they reinstalled the old one.
it did several months of use before the replacement one turned up.
it was a risk, but we got away with it for a short time.
cost wise, probably cheaper to install a new one than to refit the old one.

They dont make em like they used to . I reinstalled an old Carrier pre wireless circa 1983 into my own place in 2001 & still goes perfectly but outdoor unit case nearly rusted out .

Hi gpg58,

I'm kind of stealing this tread. I'm looking at replacing a 10yr old Fujitsu system as part of renovations; its currently a 5.8kw Unit; but the walls are changing, and the room is expanding.

I've been considering the Toshiba options. still on the fence if I go Toshiba, Fujitsu or Mitsubishi.

Toshiba have two offerings - PKVG24 and N3KV24 both are pretty much the same price - one is R32, the other isnt.

Love to have your opinion

You are probally better with the new r32, solely from the future proofing point of view. R410 will likely be available for a good few years yet, but r32 should be around longer still.
Seem to remember though that it to, will be phased out at some point as better gases have been developed. Others may be more up to date with that.
Are you sure a 24 will not be too big? perhaps a 22 would be better.
A 24 has a minimum output of 1.6 kw, so if room needs less than that, compressor stops, whereas a 22 has a minimum of 1 kw (8.5 kw max 6.9 rated), and is likely to therefore keep a much more stable room temperature, unless you really need the extra output, also a little cheaper to install(smaller pipes - standard 1/2 and 1/4 versus 5/8 and 3/8) and a better COP at 4.23 versus only 3.86 (cost of performance)
Oversize units often cause unstable room temperture, as they have a minimum run time for compressor, so overshoot the temp setting, then turn off and wait out restart delay before going again in an endless cycle, so can be nasty to live with.

Correction, ras 24 r32 unit uses 1/2 and 1/4 too, where old r410 used bigger.

Thanks for your reply.

The current unit is a ASTA18LCC, which is rated at 5.2kw (0.9 to 5.7kw) Cooling and 6.2kw (0.9 to 9.1kw) heating.

However, while we have never had a complaint around the cooling side of the unit, the heating side has left a little to be desired.

Hence when looking at the Toshiba units, we were trying to get something that was equal to the output of the current unit.

I would think a ras 22 to easily be more than an equal to those.

Re - maximum outputs, most brands will only output there maximum stated for 20 minutes(many lie about rated and max amount too), then throttle back to rated output.
Toshiba will stay at max until it senses load reducing (reaching set temp).

Hope you do realise one unit will rarely heat an entire house, a second smaller in hallway as a minimum, is recommended - perhaps if currently only one, do hallway first, (keep old for now.) or upgrade to a multi indoor system.

johotech, Feb 4, 4:58am
And keep in mind that the "rated" heating output is usually stated as measured with an 8deg outside temperature. If your area regularly gets lower than that, the output power of most models will drop.

What is Gree? Or was that a typo? Why are Heatpump maintenance and installer people reluctant to regas Heat pumps?

aprilguy, Feb 6, 7:57pm
Google `Gree heat pump'

planespotterhvn, Feb 6, 10:24pm
Oh yeah. Just did that. The world's largest producer of domestic heat pumps and A/Cs because it is based in China.

No reluctance to re gassing r410 systems, if a reclaim unit is availible,(after finding and fixing leak), its the old r22 that is the problem. No stock available, and replacement gas is very expensive, so unless you have a jug already, no one is going to buy one, to just use 1 kg in your unit, same applies to the other obscure gases some have. Note - the only way to get an accurate charge in a system, is to reclaim any remaining, and recharge with factory amount.
As said, smart folk usually run away, on the mention of the word Gree.
