Suggestions please on thes woodveneer hollow core intermal doors. Want to update look as they are dark n look v grubby. Wonder about painting them and updating handles rather than replacing them. after all nothing wrong just very dated looking. Do wonder,if once walls that will be painted white, will cheer them up?. any suggestions/opinions. and/or what u have done? I may end up just really giving them good clean and changing handles. Thanks in advance.

If you paint them, give them a good clean with meths first, over the yrs they would have picked up all sorts of fatty deposits from hands, chemicals . fly spray etc etc, once cleaned a light sand then use a pigmented sealer, this will give you a great surface to install another colour,if you are putting something light you may need a couple of coats of sealer as dark colours can bleed.

Thank you happychappy50 - great to hear how to prepare them correctly. :-) as I don't think I can live with such darkness every where.

When we bought the house we are in now, it had sliding doors on every doorway. Lovely brown veneer (blergh!). So we had them all removed and put in ordinary doors. Two remained and were used in the renovation. These we sealed and painted and they look just like the other new ones, and we bought nice chrome handles. The wardrobe doors too were veneer, so they too were sealed, a couple were painted with blackboard paint. Just a tip, veneer doors from the 70's actually sell quite well on here, we had someone buy up all the sliding doors. Very "in". Our house is 1969/70 so had a lot of quirky things in it.

I went down this road- The brown hides all the dings and nicks. I did a couple- the hinges you will find will be well worn. They need a good sand, pigmented sealer then paint. Due to the 40 years of abuse mine had I ended up chucking them all and re hanging new. A lot less sanding and filling. The old doors are a 40mm door the new 35mm so a little bit of checking out in the frame hinge rebate to get them sitting back 5 mm. Well worth it- new doors are a lot more sound proof than the old ones.
