Is double glazing of windows compulsory now on new builds and if so what year was this from!

The area is central to north of North Island if the regulations differ by regions.

Thanks in advance.

Quote from NZ Building code website
"From 31 October 2007, tougher standards apply for the thermal performance of every home built in the South Island and North Island Central Plateau. In most instances, this will mean the use of window double-glazing and more insulation in walls and roof.By October 2008, all new homes throughout New Zealand will need to meet these new requirements. The new rules also apply to most buildings with a floor area less than 300m2, and to all major extensions."

If you adding onto an existing dwelling & want to re-use a an existing window that is single glazed then you can use it providing you compensate by increasing the R value of the insulation in the walls & ceiling etc., There's a fairly complex set of calc's to do tho.

It's so worth putting in double glazing - quieter and warmer.
We did our whole house 2 years ago. Cost an arm and a leg, but it has made a huge difference.
