Price per metre to build a deck

cabrio1, Sep 27, 10:47pm
Does anyone know a ball park figure to build a simple deck.
Approx 20 sq m

For cheap H3 pine, I'd say $40 per square metre. I use H4 rough sawn pine for joists as they are much cheaper, but may need cutting straight.
If the deck is more than one metre off the ground it will need a handrail.

Labour is extra!

If you are going to the trouble of building a deck you want to use decent timber. The cheapest 100 x 40 H3 premium pine that I can see on Trademe is $3.75/ lineal metre. Allowing for 10% wastage, the decking timber alone is going to cost $40 per square metre. Then there is the cost of joists, bearers, piles, concrete footings and fixingsi

Haha. That photo isn't "merch" grade. I'd be taking a copy in with me and asking them why their timber doesn't resemble the photo.

trade4us2, Sep 28, 4:57am
What is that proving, apart from that it is thinner and a different timber and price?

johotech, Sep 28, 5:03am
It's proving that their photos aren't the timber they are listing. It's the same photo for premium and merch grade. And the photo isn't merch grade.

Merch grade is rubbish.

I believe I have bought from that company years ago. For decking I can cut out any poor timber.

Only if you get more than ~400mm between defects.

I select the timber that I want. It's never that bad.
The question that I asked on the merch auction has been answered.

Just an update , I have priced all the wood, cement etc.
I have used machine grade bearers and joists and best quality pine decking.
Prob a bit more expensive than rough sawn and I don't get a trade discount of any worth.
Approx $100 per metre then labour.
20 sqm materials about 2K.
All design to code, lets just say it wont blow away.
Cheers for the advise

Not that I am a builder or anything but i did do a concreting course a way back and was told the same. Was also told that merchant grade was useful as boxing but even then had to be closely inspected before using or buying.

Not sure that I would ever use merchant grade on something like a deck?

Sure that I would never.
